Vickers, Fidler in United attack for West Riding Cup semi-final

By PHIL BROWN

Leeds United and Bradford meet in the first semi-final of the West Riding Senior Cup at Elland Road tonight (6.30), while Huddersfield Town and Halifax Town meet at Leeds Road (6.00) in the first round of this miniature competition to decide who meets Bradford City in the semi-final.

United and Town both field somewhat unfamiliar looking sides because of injury and illness. United's absentees are Charles (cartilage), Dunn (flu), and Mills (recurred bruised toe), while Tyrer has a cold. United have Milburn at right-back, Hair moving over to displace Hughes, Vickers for Mills at inside right, and Fidler for Milburn at centre-forward compared with the side so well beaten at Swansea. Bradford continue to omit Haines at inside-left and Downie in goal, Wright and Heffron continuing, while the new successful defensive combination - centre-half Horsman at left back, and left-back Hindle at centre-half - is also retained.

United's 5-1 win

Leeds United qualified last night at Elland Road for the final of the West Riding Senior Cup by beating Bradford 5-1, but they will have to wait until next week before their opponents are named. Halifax Town and Huddersfield Town drew 1-1 at Huddersfield in a first round match; they replay next Wednesday at Halifax and then the winners meet Bradford City in the semi-final.

United won on merit, but Bradford had to struggle for nearly all the game with only ten men, right-half Lynn retiring because of a pulled muscle. Bradford did well to narrow the margin to 2-1 midway through the second half, but Leeds then settled the issue with three goals in five minutes. Fidler (2), Iggleden, Harrison and Kerfoot (Leeds) and Turner (Bradford) were the scorers in what was United's biggest total since Southampton were beaten at Elland Road a year ago. The attendance was small with just 3,000 at Elland Road.
